As a busy mom, sometimes (well, let’s face it. quite a lot) I find myself struggling with the fact that I just have too much on my plate and all I wish for is some quiet, and the weel to spend time with my kids, especially before our holidays.
Yes, I’m talking about Chanukah, my favorite holiday. When the streets are decorated with red and green, I want my boys to be proud of the blue of the star David, to know how to tell the story of Chanukah’s miracles and how to say the blessings before we light our Menorah every night.
When my father was alive, every year he used to build a new Menorah with my boys. it was their own little project. they picked up pieces of wood, stones and everything they found interesting enough, glued and painted, and were always very proud of the outcome.
In the last few years it became my responsibility, and every year I try to find something engaging enough to create this special ‘us time’, do something that we all find interesting enough and give us the time to talk about the traditions and rituals of the holiday.
So this year I decided that we are going to make our very own Chanukah candles!
How to make your own Chanukah candles
– 44 candles sheets made from 100% pure beeswax size 2*4 inches
– 44 Candlewick size 5 inches each.
1. Cut the wick to approximately 6 inches long.
2. Place the cut piece of wick at the wide end (4-inch-long) of the wax sheet, parallel with the straight edge of the sheet.
3. Begin to roll the candle with clean hands, ensuring the candle stays straight with the edge of the sheet.
Note: if the wax has been kept in a cool room it may need warming slightly in order to make it easier to roll. The wax can be warmed with a hair dryer, but make sure not to overheat it.
Safety: Always burn candles away from anything flammable. Keep burning candles out of reach of children & pets. Don’t leave a burning candle unattended.
